Know Your Bike Parking

Before you start biking to school, figure out the different places where you can park. Once you get your schedule, knowing different places will help you in case some areas are full or you are late.

Here are some tips from Evelyn, a Gunn student that may also be useful at Paly.

Rosie Mesterhazy (RM): Hey Evelyn! Any tips for bike parking at Gunn?
Evelyn (E): I think there’s a lot of good parking, the biggest cages are by bow gym and the village though, and of course lock your bike. I’ve seen bikes left near classrooms, but there are mostly places to park bikes on every corner of campus so it’s not super common.

RM: Did you have any friends get their bike stolen?
E: The bike cages don’t get locked or anything so I would guess that it does happen, though I don’t know anyone specifically. I usually come early when it’s less crowded to park my bike because the racks usually get pretty crowded, with bikes on both sides of the hoops. Personally I don’t like biking into campus from the Arastradero side, like where the cars come in.

RM: What if you have to take your bike out of the cage during the day?
E: You can always take your bike during prep or lunch.

RM: Any Gunn specific tips for rain or cold weather?
E: For the rain it’s nice to have something to put over your seat.

RM: Do you come to school any other way?
E: I have taken the bus, but not with a bike. It is a good option for transportation. I took the bus while I was injured and couldn’t bike or sometimes when I had a big project to transport, or the weather was especially bad. It is pretty reliable and arrives a bit early at Gunn so there is room for it to be a bit late. Most teachers will be ok with it if you come late because the bus was late and won’t give you a tardy.
